In DC It's Okay To Ride With Strangers

DC has always been ranked among the top cities in the world with the worse commute. People commute from as far north as Baltimore and as far south as Fredericksburg. Unfortunately, Metro doesn’t go that far out; and sometimes you can’t rely on the MARC or the VRE. So leave it to the Virginians to take a page out of Los Angeles' playbook by producing the infamous Slug Line. I’d explain the history of this phenomenon but your homework is to check out the details on your own at http://www.slug-lines.com/. What I can tell you though is that it’s not what you think. Read more »

Florida Avenue Market: Not your average bazaar

This past Sunday I took my mother to Florida Avenue Market, located on Florida Avenue and close to New York Avenue Metro stop. Though I’ve lived a mere two blocks from the market for almost a year now, this was my first time visiting. Florida Avenue Market is mostly a wholesale market with cheap cuts of meat displayed on wooden blocks for your viewing. I must confess that you have to have a strong stomach to handle the assault of smells that hit your nose the second you wander downstairs to the food court. Perhaps it was because I hadn’t had any real breakfast before heading out to the market, but wandering through the narrow aisles of the food court, the smells became a bit much for me to handle. Read more »

Pub Quiz Nights Test D.C.’s Bar Brains

Fado’s Irish Pub
808 7th St NW
Washington, DC 20001
(202) 789-0066
District: Chinatown
Mondays, 8-10 pm

The teams gather at tables, and the bar is abuzz. Members settle on quirky names that reflect current events. The stakes are high, and the competition is keen- given the per capita percentage of "Jeopardy" contestants who call D.C. home. It's Pub Quiz Night at Fado's Irish in bustling, trendy Chinatown. Welcome to a tavern where the questions are tough but the patrons are amiable, and bring your "A" game to the table. Teams vary in number of members, but the constant is fun and festivity, for $50 prizes. Walk away a winner, and hang the telltale tee shirt in your office queue (or is it "cue", for cubicle- you're the trivia expert).

The Pour House Read more »

This man demonstrates how most of us feel about the IRS. Fortunately we're done with tax season, but next year's woes will come around the corner before we know it. We'll try to put a more up-beat photo up next time.
Places of Repose: The cemeteries of Washington, DC

First a short explanation of the authors’ predilection for loitering in places that few visit voluntarily:

Cemeteries have always had a strange sort of allure in human imagination. There is the schlock Hollywood version of Cemeteries, the version that heightens our fears and exploits our confusion about the nature of death. There are the deeply personal places of eternal rest that have a better basis in reality, both inferred and emotional, to those of us still existent. Read more »

"Virginia Tech family members across the country have united to declare this Friday, April 20th, an Orange and Maroon Effect day to honor those killed in the tragic events on campus Monday, and to show support for Virginia Tech students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, and friends. Orange and Maroon Effect was born several years ago as an invitation to Tech fans to wear orange and maroon to Virginia Tech athletic events. We invite everyone from all over the country to be a part of the Virginia Tech family this Friday, to wear orange and maroon to support the families of those who were lost, and to support the school and community we all love so much."

Living Outside the City: Lots to do without spending a fortune

No need to spend an arm and a leg for a 400 sq/ft studio in the city when on the outskirts you wager only a foot. Elan, Bristol at Fairchase, and Camden are a few of the brand new apartment complexes in Fairfax County paving the way for urban living outside the city. Modern condominium like floor plans and stylish lofts are making their way to the suburbs to keep locals local. Read more »
