Urban Film Series Hits E Street Cinema

A few nights ago marked the public premiere of the indie film “And Then Came Love”, starring Vanessa Williams, Eartha Kitt and Ben Vereen. The smart romantic comedy is part of the Urban Film & Discussion Series taking place monthly at Landmark E Street Cinema at 555 11th St., N.W., a great place to catch a flick and hang out afterwards. Each film is followed by brief Q & A period in one of the theatres, generally featuring the filmmaker or director. Read more »

And We Do Care About the Young Folks

Peter, Bjorn and John brought to DC’s 9:30 Club on a warm Monday evening, an inspired performance of the typically whimsical yet intellectual music that has made them a hit around the world. These three goofy but ultra cool guys from Sweden know how to work a moderately large crowd, innocently flirting with them with their charming songs, cracking them up with jokes in the interims and even rocking out on the guitar al-la Eddie Van Halen. Read more »

"Die Walküre" by the Washington National Opera

Its always a treat to see Plácido Domingo. You can imagine my disappointment then when an announcement was made prior to the beginning of the Washington National Opera’s performance of Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre, that Mr. Domingo was feeling a bit under the weather, and that, although he intended to still perform, he was apologizing in advance for a less than stellar performance. I couldn’t thereafter discern if Mr. Domingo had popped an airborne before curtain call and suddenly, within the ten minutes it took him to get on stage, had a resurgence of health and vibrancy, or if the earlier announcement was a prank because as it were, Plácido Domingo sounded typically phenomenal. Read more »

Once again, Dick Valentine and his band folk have brought exciting dance music back to DC. Saturday night’s performance at the Black Cat was expectedly energetic and fun as the Electric Six pumped out audience favorites such as “Improper Dancing”, “Fire at the Disco” and probably their most infamous song of all “Gay Bar”. Read more »

Proudly representing the Irish flag the 6th Annual Shamrock Festival

For those of you lucky enough to have attended Washington, DC's 6th Annual Shamrock Fest last Saturday you may have noticed a few things. First off the weather couldn't have been better with the sun shinning brightly and temperatures in the 60's. Also, there was three times the space this year with HiBall Events' decision to move the festival away from the crowded Ballston area to the open parking lot at RFK. Many people initially complained about this change of venue and even protested with Anti-Shamrock Fest parties, but I for one appreciated more entrances, more beer taps, and more bathrooms Read more »

Scissor Sisters Brings Down the District/House

What a treat it was to see the Scissor Sisters this past Sunday night at 9:30 club. If you thought, after listening to any one of the songs off the Scissor Sisters’ first two albums (their debut – a self-titled album and their newest album appropriately titled Ta-Dah), that a band whose sound is often defined by synthesizers, voice echoes and other electronica touches, could sound good live, you were correct – the Scissor Sisters sounded better. The show started off with an amusing romp of an opening “band” known as Wigs on Sticks. As I had neither heard anything by Wigs, nor had I even heard of the band, I had come to the concert with curiosity and intrigue. Read more »

I couldn’t put my finger on it –but on February 24th I felt I was in two different worlds. Was it something to do with my daily horoscope or, perhaps, the cranberry vodka?

No, it was actually the unlikely assortment of the talent that took the stage at The Black Cat last weekend: Aramis y su Orquesta Ashe (opening), Si*Sé (headlining), and DJ Cottonbelly (spinning in the downtime). One moment I was in Salsa paradise and the next in an alternative Indie universe. While from the outsider’s perspective this fusion looks appealing, the odd mix of energies and fans of these very different genres proved, if possible, too diverse. Something didn’t mesh. Read more »
