2007 Air Quality Report Ranks Washington Among Nation’s Most “Unhealthful” Cities

While the benefits of living and working in the nation’s capital sometimes seem too numerous to count, a recent study published by the American Lung Association (ALA) ensures that one benefit---clean air---definitely won’t show up on any “I Love D.C.!” lists this year.

According to the ALA’s 2007 “State of The Air” report (SOTA), the Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia region ranks eleventh among metropolitan areas plagued by “short term particle” and “ozone” pollution and twentieth among those affected by “year round particles.” Read more »

DC Says "Good-bye" to the Queen

The jolly old Queen of England will be leaving us today after completing her trip commemorating the 400 years since the founding of Jamestown. Her visit may have been brief, but she found time to visit the Kentucky Derby and have tea with the Bushes. Long live the Queen!

When the “DC Madam” Deborah Jeane Palfrey arrived at the courthouse on Monday, the Washington Post described one of her two companions as a “freelance writer carrying a National Wildlife Federation tote bag." The Post also noted that Ms. Palfrey was wearing “a snug blue jacket, striped pants and 2 1/2 -inch heels. She had dangling teardrop earrings and heavy mascara, and lipstick applied to enhance her Cupid's bow." Too bad they didn't tell us what style robe the judge was wearing and whether or not she looked “cute” with her gavel. Read more »

"Virginia Tech family members across the country have united to declare this Friday, April 20th, an Orange and Maroon Effect day to honor those killed in the tragic events on campus Monday, and to show support for Virginia Tech students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni, and friends. Orange and Maroon Effect was born several years ago as an invitation to Tech fans to wear orange and maroon to Virginia Tech athletic events. We invite everyone from all over the country to be a part of the Virginia Tech family this Friday, to wear orange and maroon to support the families of those who were lost, and to support the school and community we all love so much."

Approximately 33 people are dead and 15 wounded after a lone gunman terrorized the Virginia Tech campus. The video above was taken by a brave Virginia Tech student. This is the worst shooting in American history.

Protesting Truckers to Create Blockade Near The White House

According to the Save America Fund Website Fed-up American trucker's will hold a truckers "Truck Out" blockade rally on April 23rd, 24th, and 25th to protest President Bush signing a bill that will allow Mexican truckers to enter the country. They are angry because these foreign workers won't be subject to the same laws and regulations as American truckers. It should be quite a sight to see a parade of trucks slowly rolling around the Capital.

I couldn't believe my own eyes. As I waded through ESPN's dismal afternoon line up of television, the crawl at the bottom of the screen snapped me to immediate attentinon: "CBS Fires Don Imus". Every year cherry trees bloom and draw millions of visitors to the nation’s capital to absorb the views of pink and white. Some years it is so cold the buds barely want to peek out, and others it is so hot that they burst out, bloom and snow a pink storm of petals before anyone realizes that the event has happened. The fickle seasons of DC makes guessing when the trees will bloom almost as exciting as gambling in Las Vegas, and as predicable with the results. Read more »
