In DC It's Okay To Ride With Strangers

DC has always been ranked among the top cities in the world with the worse commute. People commute from as far north as Baltimore and as far south as Fredericksburg. Unfortunately, Metro doesn’t go that far out; and sometimes you can’t rely on the MARC or the VRE. So leave it to the Virginians to take a page out of Los Angeles' playbook by producing the infamous Slug Line. I’d explain the history of this phenomenon but your homework is to check out the details on your own at http://www.slug-lines.com/. What I can tell you though is that it’s not what you think. Read more »

Ron Paul: The Best Choice for Democrats

Confession: I've never voted for a Republican in my life. Not even Ronald Reagan. Never even considered it.

As a lifelong conservative Democrat, I enthusiastically began to research each candidate in an attempt to get a better idea of who I might support in the primary. Read more »

Washington, DC Radio Shows: Are there any good ones left?

I don’t confess to know a lot about everything, or a little about anything, but I do know something about one thing – DC Radio Morning Shows. More specifically, those geared towards spitting Hip Hop and R&B. Let’s go down the list, shall we? You have Russ Parr on 93.9, Donnie Simpson on 95.5, Steve Harvey on 96.3 and Tom Joyner on 102.3. Russ and Donnie probably have listeners in their 20’s and 30’s while Steve and Tom cater toward older listeners. If you’re looking around for the women DJ’s, please take a number and wait until your name is called – there are none. But wait, they all have female sidekicks so does that count? Well, everyone except Donnie Simpson, what’s up with that? Read more »

She had dangling teardrop earrings and heavy mascara, and lipstick applied to enhance her Cupid's bow." Too bad they didn't tell us what style robe the judge was wearing and whether or not she looked “cute” with her gavel. Read more »

A Unique Perspective On the Don Imus "Incident"

I couldn't believe my own eyes. As I waded through ESPN's dismal afternoon line up of television, the crawl at the bottom of the screen snapped me to immediate attentinon: "CBS Fires Don Imus". Surely this was a joke. A belated April Fool's trick, right? Alas, no. The first thing that popped in my mind was that this couldn't possibly lead to anything good down the road. Read more »

Metro Rules of Engagement

Steph P's vent session

By no means do I declare myself the expert on all things metro. However, I’ve been in this city long enough to know the ins and outs of the public transportation system. A while back, metro unveiled an ad campaign with made-up words such as Conseaterate and Doorker in an attempt to help passengers modify their commuting behavior. While I appreciate the initial humor associated with this effort, I don’t think Metro went far enough. To commuters and tourists alike, I’d like to impart some friendly rules of engagement when it comes to riding metro busses and trains. Read more »

Undermining Ourselves: When we sacrifice our common good for personal gain

"For the first time in history, fire melted steel”. These are the words of a TV personality who hosts a popular network television show. The host pointed out that the planes that entered the world trade center on September 11th did not cause the collapse of the 2 buildings. She claimed that the buildings were bombed because fire can’t melt steel. Is that so? I’ve got one word for her-FORGING. Read more »

Sins of the Fathers: The smearing of a man who would be president

Republican presidential hopeful and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney was the recipient of outrageous campaign mudslinging over the weekend when the Associated Press published an hit piece revealing that his great-grandfather had fives wives and great-great-grandfather had twelve.

Romney has been married – to one woman – for 37 years. He has disavowed polygamy in the past calling it "bizarre." In fact, while Romney has only had one wife his primary opponents haven't. John McCain is in his second marriage and Rudy Guiliani in his third (including briefly being married to his cousin). Read more »

Are Charter Schools Threatening DC Public Schools?

What is the greatest threat to the success of our neighborhood public schools here in DC? The answer is simple: charter schools.

Charter schools are private schools set up with and funded by our public tax dollars. They are initiated to steal funds and high performing students from urban public schools, perpetuating the failure of traditional neighborhood schools. The Right supports “public” charter schools as a means to begin the privatization of public schools altogether. The Left supports them as they do all social programs that help heal their legacy of guilt, while at the same time institutionalize racism and classism. Read more »
